How useful is Peterson's perspective of a production of culture perspective in relation to explaning the birth of rock and roll?

Peterson uses six factors to explain the birth of rock and roll. These are law, technology, industry structure, organisation structure, occupational career and the market. Peterson highlight some good points such as with portable radios for peoples houses and even cars, places people could not get televisions. Different careers evolved such as craftsmen, showmen and entrepeners creating a different music envoirenment. In the 1950's the market became bigger with the introduction of the top 40 charts after the radio became flooded with new music. Peterson also mentions the myths, explaining supplys such as Elvis and Chuck Berry, also the baby boom, as the babys would only be around 9 years old. A big aspect in Petersons review is the fact he does not mention anything about the music. He also does not mention the fact about the technology of the electric guitar, one of the main factors for rock and roll.

what is popular music

The term popular originates as belonging to the people. Throughout the centurys it has changed to mean 'favour of the people',' to be good', 'of the people' and 'folk'. 'Folk' music consists of all types of music, for example folk music can be a church choir, singing in the shower or singing happy birthday for someone. Popular music literally is what lots of people like and enjoy. The British public have brought records from Pavarotti to children's television celebritys such as Bob the builder and Mr Blobby, in which these records have reached number one. Personally I feel popular music is what music is being brought in the shops, what is in the charts and what appeals to a wide audience, aslong as it is liked it can be deemed as popular, just because it is a certain genre, it does not mean it is not popular. Shuker feels that popular music ' consists of a hybrid of musical traditions, styles and influences, and also an economic product which is invested with ideological significance by many of its consumers'.
